OCT Hike, Day 6

The Elk River

My destination today is Port Orford, and a Bed and Breakfast there. I packed up the tent and gear, had breakfast, and took off. I told the park ranger where I would be that night in case there were any questions about the shipwreck.

Most of the days hike was on sand, but it was not too soft, so the going was good. I had to cross the Elk river, but maximum depth was about 2 inches. It is much deeper in wetter years.

Lunch was the usual crackers, salami, pemmican, and trail mix. Weather was mostly sunny, with the wind behind our backs. Only ran across a couple of people on the beach. Several seals followed our progress. Also saw quite a few snowy plover.

I reached the park just north of Port Orford where the OCT heads inland to go around Port Orford Heads. I attempted to call a B&B to see if there was a vacancy, but the batteries on the cell phone went dead mid conversation. I hiked on backroads the last mile on two into town, and used a phone in a hardware store to call the Holly House B&B. Their web site is here.

Holly House is a nifty, roomy, funky kind of place. So is the propritress. I greatly enjoyed our stay there, and will return again. Update: The Holly House seems to have gone out of business.

I was happy to get the our room that night, since the blisters on my feet were acting up again. Port Orford has several decent to good restaurants. Our favorite is Paula's Bistro, formerly known as Speghetti West. They are a bit expensive, but the food is worth it. They are best for dinner.

I ate lunch at the Crazy Norweigan's. They are ok, but not great.
